There’s a lot of movement in Germany when it comes to the protein shift – and surprisingly, big retailers are taking the lead. While investors and Big Food are becoming more cautious about plant-based, the retail sector is seizing this transition as an economic opportunity.
📊 Systemiq, a leading German sustainability consultancy, recently published the report “A Taste of Tomorrow”, which names protein diversification as a key driver for economic growth.
🌍 Green Queen, an influential global food & climate media, reported on a groundbreaking development in February: 📰 “Rewe Group unveils Plant Protein Strategy, Calls for Policy Reform.”
🔎 Why is this important?
Rewe Group, Germany’s second-largest retailer with more than 3,800 supermarkets (Rewe, Penny, Netto) and 390,000 employees, has developed an ambitious protein strategy. According to Emilie Bourgoin, Public Affairs Director at Rewe:💬 "As one of the retail companies in Europe with an ambitious climate target, we have committed to a holistic protein strategy. One thing is certain: our food production must become more climate and resource friendly. At Rewe Group, we are joining the Planetary Health Diet (EAT-Lancet), a scientifically proven nutritional plan. And we have developed an ambitious protein strategy."
